With urethral catheterisation volumes currently considerably increased, we are pleased to be able to announce that NHS Supply Chain is now listing the Urethral Catheterisation Device (UCD) (Urethrotech Ltd), available on NPC code FST951. The NICE-approved UCD provides a safer solution for cases of difficult catheterisation, reducing the possibility of urethral injury and related complications and helps to support healthcare professionals with sometimes limited experience of catheterisation to solve difficult cases safely and effectively. This is particularly relevant if difficult catheterisation has to managed in full PPE in high-risk clinical environments. The integrated non-traumatic guidewire of the UCD® helps to navigate the catheter safely into the bladder. The UCD® is used when a gentle first-pass attempt with a standard Foley catheter has failed, most commonly in elderly men with age-related prostate enlargement. Mr Hines, Consultant Urologist at UCLH comments; “The UCD-catheter may avoid more invasive emergency procedures and allows hospital staff to provide safe patient care in difficult circumstances.”
